The substrate choice depends on the type of snake being kept.  Different snakes come from different types of habitats.  Some live in high humid, tropical environments whilst others live in dryer desert type environments.  The substrate choice will depend on this factor.

If you feed your snake in its enclosure, make sure you are using a natural substrate that can be digested and pass through the snake without issues.  Substrates that cannot be digested causes impaction (intestinal blockage) in the snakes gut.  This will cause death in your snake over a short period of time.

If you are feeding your snake outside of its enclosure, the following types of substrate can be used.  Coconut husk, corn cob, untreated wood shavings, paper towel, newspapers and many more.

Do plenty research on the different types of substrates pros and cons before making your choice.
